Past & Present Program Participants

  • Brenda with Kagiso from Cotlands

    Twilight Shelter

Our main task with this group was to assist in their rehabilitation back into society.

We started working with the street children during January 2004 who had volunteered to go into the Shelter for rehabilitation and schooling. These boys, aged between twelve and twenty-one, have been traumatized; due to abandonment, substance and sexual abuse, neglect, and witnessing violent crime or participating in petty crimes.

They attended the program each Monday, and we assisted those with potential to be educated at Sparrow Foundation Schools.

  • St. George's

Our main task was to address behavior and emotional imbalances resulting from substance addiction or the consequence of parental neglect.

This group of young adults aged between eighteen and twenty-one joined us in April 2004. These adolescents; have been removed from their families by the legal system due to various problems, and placed at St George’s where they receive an 18-month training program in basic adult education.

  • Cotlands

Our main task was to address behavior and physical disabilities resulting from HIV Aids.

During September 2005, this young group of children aged between five and nine years old joined our program. These children had been orphaned through HIV aids and were themselves HIV positive. They were all on antiretroviral medication.

Most of them showed signs of ADD or ADHD. These children thrived on the program. The period of focusing their attention increased weekly. Their self esteem and confidence grew tremendously. Their eagerness and willingness to try out new things made them our weekly pleasure.

  • Abraham Kriel Children's Home

They started with us around 2012 and had a girl’s and boy’s section. They came on alternate weeks for around 5 years. There children were in a place of safety - so each child had different emotional scars. The horses don’t mind what their past is as they work in the moment. Their ages ranged from around 7 - 17 years old. These kids suffered from various trauma , abuse and neglect

  • Saint Nicholas Children's Home

They started with us around the same time as Abraham Kriel, but their ages were much younger. They were also in a place of safety and were taken away for the same reasons, abuse, trauma and neglect. They came once a week and they made great strides towards beginning their healing process.

  • Individual Children

We have worked and currently work with children that have no access to any mental health professionals due to cost constraints. Some of these children suffered with autism and also various other traumas. Autistic children seem to get a lot from just working with the horses.
